Our very senior cat has scratch on abdomen that we thought had healed but have discovered it hasn't--cat is touchy and doesn't like to have its belly rubbed so we didn't know for while.
The vet RX an antibiotic that comes in capsule form--too big to shoot down his throat. We have tried opening it and putting powder in small amount of food...he ate it ok the first day but the taste is bitter and he takes a long time to finish it...just not best way to give an antibiotic...
The compounded treat won't be ready until Monday...
Do pill pockets work for a powder medicine that well?
Anyone make their own?

I forgot about compounded treats! I think I was afraid my cat would not eat them. I use flavored liquid.
maybe you could make your pill into liquid and use an eye dropper if you don't have a syringe. Even if it tastes bad it goes plop and they can't do anything about it. Sounds mean but we do what we have to......IIRC bitter tasting things are made worse by fish flavor so I wouldn't use that.
It would be a real pain to try and fill a pill pocket with powder, not to mention that if the powder is bitter you would have to make sure none of it was detectable on the outside.
Have you tried mixing it with chicken or turkey baby food?
How big is the capsule? You can pill a relatively large pill. Our Benny gets Cosequin and won't take it mixed into anything, so I tried pilling him--it works. Make sure to always follow with a treat or some water.
My cat received antibiotics with a shot. Try asking your Vet if they have that. It was 1 shot or 7-10 pills. Probably had to pay $70 for the shot.
I did not want to shove a pill down his throat ever again.
Pocket pills never worked for me since he chews it and ignores it.
Otherwise, mix wet food with powder and add chicken broth to it.

I've used Greenies Feline Pill Pockets, chicken flavor, with powdered meds. My kitty takes 2 pill meds daily and this works for that administration as well. These are separate procedures: I take half a pill pocket and flatten it out. For pill meds I wrap the pills in it and mold the pocket around them. For a powder med I flatten out the half pocket and make a dent in it; then I either spread the powder and close it up like wrapping a gift- making sure the med in enclosed so he can't smell it.
Or, if the capsule is small enough I will wrap it as above but whole. I talk soothingly but with a happy face and gently exhale close to his nose. A treat always follows! Even with regular meds there can be occasional resistance. If so, I start with a treat. Although I have not yet had to do it, some recommend rolling the pill pocket in a little butter. Personally I would not want to do this every day but would for a short term antibiotic course if necessary.
