I have a Kong Zoom Groom, and other than the Furminator, it seems to be the best at removing fur. Regular bristle brushes just seem to pet the cats more than remove fur.
You might also try a plain 'ol comb. I have a small blue one with wide teeth on one end and narrow teeth on the other. I use it often to brush my cats. They aren't long hairs but the I get quite a bit of hair off of them and they love how it feels (that always make things easier!)
I was asking specifically about tools rather than diet. The Furminator is good but, given how heavy it is and how hard you have to bear down, it's not really practical for any area but the neck and back; maybe the tail. He doesn't mind being brushed or combed with a lighter touch, but none of the usual implements seem to do that great a job. I'm asking what will really grab and remove the hairs that I may not have tried, or else I'll just shave him down. Seems the wire slicker just skims the surface.
Our cat loves the slicker. I use the Four Paws medium-size dog one, and it does the job. Every morning, he gets a 5-minute brushing. He waits next to his "grooming" chair. I give him a pretty vigorous brushing with that thing, and it works.
