Now that she is 8 years old, any time she is put under she will have to have the more extensive monitoring done, which is $150 right there, and something the vet requires for all pets 8 and older, no matter what the reason for anesthesia. Also, she had a senior blood panel done, which was a separate $230 or so. Dentals have been my only medical expense for her other than her yearly exams.

You don't want to skimp on dental care, because dental health, or lack of it, has a direct effect on the rest of the health of the animal. My vet is a stickler on that; that, and parasite prevention are two sticking points for him.
That was years ago, as mentioned in my post. The most recent one cost close to $600, with the Feb. dental month discount. And I originally started this thread because of what we had to pay a couple of years ago. There should be a balance where dental care is affordable for pet owners, but still makes a profit for veterinarians. Pet companionship - and keeping pets in good health - should not be a luxury many people can't afford.

soooo trueeeee......I completely relate to what you've said.

It cost me around $1000 for the removal of 11 of my cat's teeth about a month ago. The good news is that she recovered almost immediately.
