I’m sorry you had to go through the same thing. The only saving grace for us was our DIL, a vet tech, was visiting with our son and grandkids. I thought Sammy had hurt his back. She felt no pulse in his back leg and said it was an emergency, we shouldn’t wait. She couldn’t tell us what she knew the outcome would be, although she knew. I’m so grateful she was there. And enough sadness, I’m loving the stories here filled with love.
I've been thinking a lot about our cats that died years ago lately. Eight of them are buried in my back yard, and I never thought that I would be leaving them behind. However, due to my recent heart attack, I'm closing on a home in town tomorrow and will have to sell this home. I've been here 16 years and kind of feel like I'm abandoning them.

Eight, you must feel sad....sorry about your health troubles and having to leave...
I've left little kitty graves each place I've lived, and remember feeling the same way.
The cat from my past I think most about is Chewey, who my family got when I was in my teens and who died in the early 90's. Until I got my current cat she was my all-time favorite cat. I remember when I first went away to college, after my first semester I came home (was gone for several months), when I arrived home she saw me and completely bolted up the stairs, in what appeared to be a burst of anger, like, Why did you go away for so long? So I followed her up to console her. Anyway, some years after I had long moved out of my parents' house my mother told me she was having kidney failure and was getting really thin and frail, and it so happens I was going to come home to visit in a couple weeks for Thanksgiving. I arrived home from the airport early in the evening, and I saw Chewey lying in her kitty bed, thin and frail, and I think I must have spent at least an hour sitting over her, crying. The next day me and one of my sisters made an appointment to take her to a vet to have her euthanized, so we took her there the day after. I was the last thing she ever saw. We got her in a box and had a little ceremony to bury her in the backyard.

It's so hard to see them age, get frail....
That's important to me too, that they are held and can see I'm there with them as the injections are given. Almost kills you but it's a responsibility we must uphold as cat parents.
Yes, absolutely! I still think about my childhood cat from many years ago who was a one of a kind. The meanest, smartest cat that I have ever known. Adopted him from the ASPCA. Then, the friendlier ones came later who were feral and found off the street. I never had a "normal" cat in terms of acting with typical catlike behavior. I've also had rabbits, who I also loved. They have become popular pets now, but back then it was unusual to have a house rabbit, especially in a city. I wonder why CD doesn't have a rabbit subforum.

Growing up, we had a number of rabbits too. I remember my dad fashioned a high wire "cage" outdoors and I'd go inside with a rabbit on the grass and play. It was a pretty clever set up.
