I don't know if anyone had the magic cure but my 10 week old kitten goes in the litter box and out of it.
CAn't figure out the problem and I'm beside myself. I can't put up with this and it is breaking my heart.
We had her to the vets yesterday and he made a few suggestions. I'll give them a try starting with a bigger litter box with a lid.

She has her own room with two litter boxes. At night or time out we put her in.
Then let her run the rest of the day as long as we are home.
this morning I got up and found droppings next to the box. So far this has ruined my day and I'm near tears. She is the sweetest little thing and thought of not being able to keep her is tearing me apart.
We have 2 other cats and never had a problem.
I'm running out of options and can't figure out what the problem is.

Any suggestions????

At 10 weeks, she is a baby! Chances are she wasn't trained properly by Mama (maybe taken away to young) or her habits are just lax. Again..she is a BABY! Would you expect a 2 yr old to use the toilet consistently? I would pick her up and put her in the box every hr or so.
Secondly, she may not like the litter you are using. Are you using the same litter she was trained with and used by whomever you got her from?
A lid on the box may help...she maybe jumping out of the box before she is through doing her business.
Again...please, remember she is a baby! To imply she has litterbox problems at 10 weeks is really ridiculous.

Thanks Shelbygirl............

I needed to be reminded that she is just a baby. We took her from mama about 6 weeks.
it takes patience and persistance and I feel like I'm running out. But will hang in for a while longer.

Remember, a lot of breeders won't even let their kittens go until 12 weeks! 8 weeks is usually the norm....but I have had kittens at 6. He/She needs some consistent training. Keep us posted...and any other questions, feel free to ask.

Maybe he is just missing the box.. Mine have done that occasionally when they were in the box but standing too close to the side. Of course, mine are much older and bigger. Be sure you don't have too much litter in the box too.

Shelbygirl is right, he is just a baby. Maybe put the litter box in the bathroom if you have tile in there, so it won't be such a problem if he misses occasionally.

Hi Keeper,

We have 2 other cats and both of them had no problem. We got the one at 6 months and the other at 8 weeks.
I am going out today to get a bigger litter box at the advice of my vet and the original litter.
Will try to put it in the bathroom.
WE gave her the guest room but I may have to close that off and put her in the bathroom tonight when we go to bed. I hate to do this cuz it is smaller
She thinks she is being punished..
She looks just like this and her name is smokey.

Try the doggie piddle pads under the litter box. A friend just got a kitten who also doesn't quite make the litter box. I gave her the ones I had left which were used for our senior cat who also didn't quite make the litter box. Seems to be a common problem. You can get them at Walmart and they aren't very expensive for a lot of them. Better than having odors on carpet.

There is another thread on here about this issue. IIRC they recommended you keep kitty in one room (like a bathroom) until he learns to only use the litter box. If he is going all over the house and not just missing the box, it appears he needs some retraining. He won't be mad at you for putting him a small room. Just think if he was at a shelter.. he would be in a small cage.

What kind of litter are you using? Some cats don't like scented litter. Mine didn't like the sawdust litter or the newspaper pellet litter.

Check these websites all about The Litter box and why cats do what they do...

Sometimes cats are allergic to the litter. Maybe try another brand. Had that problem years ago.
