there is no difference, it's like thinking all female humans are mean vs all male humans. same with cats, some female cats are sweet and playful. it depends on the cat's individual temperament.

i had a cat once that would talk to me and would come when i called her just like a dog. she was so trusting and the nicest cat i've ever owned. she was so nice, she would get beaten up when she went outside by other cats. i felt so sorry for her. .she was an orange tabby. she was specially empathetic, emotionally aware and understanding and still playful and fun. i haven't found a cat quite like her again.

i've had male cats that were sweet and loving too. i especially like the dark grey tabby males, they are usually feisty, active, playful, fun and loving too. my favorite all around cat.

the female cat i have now is not that nice but oh well.

Really ? I thought that once the source of the hormones were cut off (no pun intended) that it's a matter of a week that I would see changes. He was so young when I got him fixed that he wasn't really feeling them very much, he wasn't spraying, or acting naughty in male ways.

I feel so bad for him because he spends all day locked up in my bedroom, because I can't trust him to not go after Misty, and I can't allow him make her life a living hell. She had a scratched eye last week which has since healed, and I don't know if he did that to her or not. I feel it was her home first, so I let her have the house to herself during the day, and I bring her into my bedroom at night with me, because she likes to sleep with me, while he is locked out of the bedroom.

I Think they're the same. I will say this for my sister's (all strays):

Her females have tended to "ignore" or scare the dogs, while males tend to be more "Buddies" with the dogs.
(She's down to 3 cats and two dogs now.)

A few months ago, I had 2 females and one male (all spayed/neutered). The older female got outside once and she was never the same again. She ripped all our screens and scratched my kids, would try to run away, etc. Eventually, she got out and never came home. A neighbor came by one day and asked if she was ours because she had been sleeping on her bed for over a week. I told her she could keep her because she was obviously a lot happier there than with us. I think her problem was that she was a one pet per household type of cat and we had the 2 other cats plus a dog.
She never liked to be held or patted. It was like she was doing us a favor by letting us take care of her, lol.

The other female was not very affectionate except at night time when she was ready to go to bed for the evening, and then if we didn't acknowledge her presence, she would get irritated. lol We re-homed her to a new family because I felt like we were still overwhelmed with too many pets.

My male is my sweetheart. He follows me around all day long, always underfoot. He greets me when I come home, and sits in my lap if I sit down. He is very needy, very needy, but I love that about him. I tell him it is time for bed and he comes running. Even my dh loves him and dh is not very fond of cats, he is a dog person. I myself am more of a cat person and would have 20 if I could handle it.

So in my experience, males are more loving. The females I had were easy to care for but they didn't "need" me. lol. I had 2 females growing up too and they were similar to my two.

I think with males though, it makes a difference if they are neutered. When I was younger, I had 2 males not neutered and they were sort of...crazy. I don't know how to explain it, it was like the testosterone controlled their minds. lol
