Yes, antibiotics are important here...even if kitty seems to be doing okay, you don't want to risk an infection. A vet visit is most definitely in order here.

That IS an infection, big time. Pockets of pus can remain within the wound - which needs to be thoroughly cleaned out by a vet and then the cat will probably be given an IM antibiotic and then go on a course of oral antibiotics to clear up whatever might be remaining. Can't emphasize enough that you must take care of this properly and immediately. Cheers and good luck!
One of our cats had the same thing and I took him to the vet and they said it looked like a bite ,he is on antibiotics and getting better ,so do take you cat to the vet asap
Thanks for replying, The lump bursted yesterday discharging a large amount of pus.
Bushy, hopefully you are still checking in on your post? Hopefully you haven't just cleaned up kitty and gone merrily on? Hopefully you will update everyone?
Thanks for the update! And good news to hear - please just keep an eye on kitty, and don't stop any antibiotics before you administer the entire bottle, but you probably knew that. They can heal over incredibly fast, look fine, yet another infection can be happening underneath all that healthy-looking new skin.
One of our cats had a growing lump on her hip. No pain. Wife wanted to pop it. NO!
Vet stuck a needle in it and sent some fluid to the lab; it showed non-cancerous.
We had it removed anyway, a growing lump is not normal.
Vet let us be in the room during surgery. Lab said it was cancerous. That was in May, she's been fine ever since and recent checkup looked good.
Vet wanted us to do followup at the UW Veterinary School, followup chemo and/or radiation. We held off.
You do notknow what this blob is/was. TO THE VET!!
DW, bushy701 replied above and has taken kitty to the vet.
I had a very sweet cat who had a lump on the outside of her right rear upper leg. I took her to the vet and had it removed four times over a period of two years. The fifth time, I had to have her euthanized because there wasn't enough skin left on the leg to remove it again. She seemed completely healthy otherwise. It upsets me to think about it even now.
Cats are very stoic and suffer pain in silence. Just because they don't seem to be in pain doesn't mean they aren't.
