In our case, this is true. Our cats are siblings, and both have some bizarre autoimmune disease -- wish I could remember the exact name of it -- that causes any plaque on their teeth to attack their gums moreso than it would normally.
They're only 3, and each has had to have several teeth pulled already.
When we brush, they're fine. When we don't, their gums get inflamed and they paw and scratch at their mouths, poor little things.
BoyKitty loves the poultry flavored toothpaste we use. Silly cat.

Wow, must be tough. They're lucky they have caring owners!
I have had tried it before...with very little success, mostly I just got scratched.
