My friend's cat has just chewed through one her DVD player's cords and this isn't the first cord it's happened to. Any simple and cheap solutions?

You can get hard plastic conduits that wrap around cords. They may be harder for the kitty to chew through. They're usually called "cord organizers" or "cable organizers" or "cord covers."

When our first cat was a kitten, he did this. We either stapled cords to the trim along the wall, or did what we could with velcro cord raps. He grew out of it eventually, and we can leave cords all over the place now.

You can also put other cords and things for them to chew on besides the safety shielding.

Lucky he wasn't electrocuted! Spray all cords with Bitter Apple (available at any pet store) and see if that stops him. It works for dogs, don't know about cats.

Thank you, everyone. I've passed all your suggestions on to my friend and she's also thankful although Tally may not be. :-)

My cat has chewed through my laptop cable, my expensive leather purse handles, my husband's leather belts, the printer cable, the vacuum cleaner cord, etc. Bitter Apple does not work! He likes the taste of it. We are surprised he has not electrocuted himself! He does this in the middle of the night while we are sleeping. We are in a small place and can't close him off nor can we leave him outside (coyotes). We are about to part with our cat because he is costing us a great deal of money. We hide our cords and he digs under things to find them. We bury purses and hang belts--he finds them. By the time we find out the next morning about the damage he had done--he has usually chewed completely through an item or put enough holes in a cord to damage and disconnect it completely. We can't catch him unless we stay up all night. We now have put harsh smelling muscle soothing creams on every cord so the smell will get him before he gets too close. We smell of menthol. I arrived late from a trip and forgot to hide my Coach bag (of which he had previously ignored) and he ate through it by the morning when I woke up. Is there a reason for a cat to be so destructive when he is so very loved by us every day? A vitamin deficiency or something????

Is there a problem keeping him from running under the bed?
