winterberry02 is on a distinguished road
Unhappy new here, having to PTS my buddy

My kitty of 18years is having to go to the vet tomorrow to be PTS. He has had a thyroid condition that even on the strongest meds is just not responding. He is a walking skeleton now and over the weekend picked up an eye infection (I have no clue how as he is mostly indoors and there are NO other cats or anything around!) and he is hardly eating. Tonight I tried to get him to eat and he just sat there, shaking. I though he was purring so I leaned in close to try to hear (I'm hard of hearing for certain tones) and there was no purring, just him shaking.

So, it is time. I went through this with my dog in 2004 and it was the worst thing in the world. Now, I'm being faced with it again and I just don't think I can do it. I don't want him to suffer but I just can't face bringing him in and killing him. I don't believe our vets here in SC offer an in home service. I will check though.

So, I'm a mess and just feel awful. I know it's humane but, still. I just want him to be himself again.....

If you think of it, think of me tomorrow. I just wish he would "tell" me or something, you know, a sign that "it's ok". Then again, he's always been a survivor, a real fighter. he's a love bug and always had the best sense of humor. Seriously, I real prankster of a cat! Fun, cute and just my best buddy. I know he doesn't want to die, he wants to be better and there is nothing I can do.....this is the most awful position to be in.

Thanks for reading.

B

I'm so sorry about your baby. 18 years is a nice long life and I'm sure he loved every minute of it, just as you did. Having a sick pet PTS is humane and painless for the furry friend. We're the ones who suffer the loss.

I will be thinking of you tomorrow. I know how hard it will be for you. Do you have someone who can go with you? It's the loneliest feeling in the world and it helps to have a close friend to lean on.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I know exactly how you feel...I had to PTS 2 of my cats in the last 4 months. We're all here for you...when ever you need us. You'll both be in my thoughts tomorrow.

So sorry for both of you. In my belief system, he will soon be running the great catnip fields of the sky, happy and healthy, with lots of new friends, many of them my own fur-babies. It's truly the last kind thing we can do for them when they become ill.

Winterberry - We've had so many pets over the years. Usually too many at one time! We have been fortunate that they have all lived a long life, like your yours.

Just know that you are granting him peace. Hold him with all your heart and know that you are helping him.

My thoughts will be with you today. You are giving him the last and most humane gift of all. Freedom from pain and discomfort. I feel, we at least owe our long time fur companions that. And while it is so very hard on us, it is, the best for them...My deepest sympathies.

Having a furry family member PTS is one of the hardest things... thinking about you and hoping you are ok.
