funny, I just caught Julius trying to drink from the toilet again tonight! this wouldn't be such a big deal (we use all natural cleaners), but he also has a habit of licking people's faces, so needless to say, the lid stays down as much as possible! my roommate and I now believe that Julius is the reincarnated soul of either a dog or a nasty perverted person (I should mention he usually tries to drink from the toilet after we've used it and will sit on our laps while we're using it!)! my old dog didn't try to drink from the toilet as much as the cat does! he also likes to drink water from glasses, from pots soaking in the sinks, even from the inside of the dishwasher after it's done. oh, and he likes liking the tops of beer bottles . funny, but he's not that thrilled w/ water overall and runs if you flick a drop at him, but he loves watching water run and drinking from odd places. thinking of getting him a water fountain to see if that cuts out some of this behavior

No but I have one cat that likes to sit with me while I am laying in the bathtub with my shower running. She will lick the water off my neck and arms. Then when I am finished she jumps in and licks all the water.

That's so cool. I have a cat that likes to drink water by sticking his paw in the bowl and licking it.

I have one that will drink out of the toilet. So we keep the lid closed. Let me heed you a warning. Keep you lids closed shut! This particular cat likes to drop all kinds of things in the water! he thought a hairbrush handle was a good thing to drop down followed by a small stuffed cat toy and a small foam ball. he did this all in one night.

Needless to say that cat cost us sewer service call...

SO KEEP YOUR LIDS CLOSED!

Then I have another one that demands I turn on the water for her to get a drink with the drips of the faucet.

And all three will drink out of the bath tub with YOU in it. You shoo one off, another one come up. The cycle keeps going on and on.....

My cat goes ballistic when I get home, screaming for me to turn the water on in the bathroom sink. The minute she hears me coming up the stairs, she starts... MEEEEEEEEOOOOOWWWW!! When I put the key in the door, it gets even louder! LOL! Then she makes sure to "direct" me to the bathroom to turn the water on. She only wants it on at a certain trickle level or she won't drink it. Now, she has the other cat (her mother) doing the same thing (except that the mama cat doesn't scream and shriek for me to turn the water on. I guess she has more patience than her offspring! LOL!)

My (now almost 17 week old) kitten has become very fascinated with the toilet and wants to watch the water swirl around when the toilet is being flushed. She also likes to watch when I transfer her litterbox droppings as well.

I keep the lid closed all the time but she follows me into the bathroom. She also 'helps herself' to my glasses of water and now I have to use a water bottle or otherwise cover up my glasses because she will 'sample' whatever she can get to.

And while she has her own little bowl of fresh/clean water next to her food, she prefers to drink from either of the 2 large doggy bowls of water and has done this since I got her. In fact she likes to march up and stand under the dog while the dog is drinking water, and then drink some herself at the same time.

/weird kitty

My cat is a water lover. But he doesn't drink out of the toilet.

The tub faucet leaks (it isn't mine, it's the landlord) and he makes several trips a day and gets his head completely soaked doing it.

He also has a very large bowl, a former vase actually, that he dips his paw in and drags around on the floor a little bit and drinks out of.

And then he has his 'real' water bowl.

Based on mine and stilllife's experiences, maybe the solution is to provide plenty of other larger water bowls for your cat to drink out of and the toilet will seem less desirable.

I really encourage my cat to drink all this water. It helps flush out his urinary tract and avoid infections and he's only had perhaps three hairballs in three years so I think it helps in the other direction too. I'd rather have a healthy cat that pees alot, increasing my litter box duties, than a sick cat.

It's a relief to read this thread. Our cat from many years ago used to drink out of the toilet and scared my 85 year old father in law out of his wits when he was visiting and saw it for the first time. After that cat died at age 10, we got a kitten from a shelter who does the SAME thing now. (I really thought ours was the only one who did this.)
