I got some photos of my mother's Abyssinians tonight, and thought I'd share them with you all. The blue one is named Jasmine, and the red is Ginger... they're both females around 2-3 years old, so fully grown, and come from champion lines. But to quote "Bedtime Stories," those eyes (on Ginger) would be big on a cow - LOL!

Such pretty cats! I see what you mean about the eyes. Is that a breed characteristic? I've never seen one in person.

Wow, Gizmo. Even in photos those two ladies exhibit grace. They are really beautiful.

Thanks for the comments all! And yes, that is a breed trait to have big eyes - but Ginger's are slightly bigger than normal. They are one of the oldest (possibly the oldest) breeds, and truly do exhibit grace even when they're being goofy. They aren't really lap-cats, but will follow you around & be affectionate in their own way... my family has owned 7 Abyssinians over the last 20 years, and the FIRST one just died last year (at age 19). I personally prefer a cuddly Persian, but always have a soft spot in my heart for Abys.

Fyi, here are the breed standards for their eyes & ears:
"EARS: alert, large, and moderately pointed; broad, and cupped at base and set as though listening. Hair on ears very short and close lying, preferably tipped with black or dark brown on a ruddy Abyssinian, chocolate-brown on a red Abyssinian, slate blue on the blue Abyssinian, or light cocoa brown on a fawn Abyssinian.
EYES: almond shaped, large, brilliant, and expressive. Neither round nor oriental. Eyes accentuated by fine dark line, encircled by light colored area."
(full article here - http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/standards/abyssinian.pdf)

Here are a few pictures of the girls as kittens... so cute, but their ears look ridiculous before they grow into them.
