My two-year-old neutered male doesn't normally act sexually in any way. But tonight he was laying on top of my female kitten (about a year old, spayed) and he was licking her, then he tried to bite her neck. I know the male bites the female's neck while mating. She is obviously not in heat. And he is neutered. He doesn't generally like the female. Do you think this is a mating ritual or just a dominance thing? They didn't appear to be playing, and he doesn't like to be around her most of the time. Just wondering what you think. I think it's probably a dominance thing, since he was here first and he wouldn't be grooming her or playing with her.

Should I be worried about dominance behavior? Is it normal?

It is normal...and sometimes, encompasses both acts. (playfulness and sexual) All of the cats here at the house are spay/neutered and the males will occasionally do exactly as you describe. In particularly, to one of our females. Beyond the female not being too thrilled...it has never gotten out of hand.

He can't make kittens, but he certainly still has the ability to spray!

Hearing about that very possibility is what has convinced me to always choose the females of the feline world.

Females have the ability to spray as well! In fact, some who deem themselves the Alpha in the group will spray just as much as any male, if not more. Again, spaying doesn't stop the physical aspect of it. Just lessens the desire. But, both are still very able to spray.

LOL....it is very possible. My Shelby was a sprayer before I spayed her at 7 months. Thankfully, she never has done it since, nor any of the other cats in the household. People often get the wrong idea that they cannot spray or mate after being fixed.

I have a couple neutered males - and they are a "couple." The smaller male frequently , as in a couple times a day, bites the back of the larger male's neck and also humps him. We have females, but the males aren't interested in them!

We have seen our males do this to one another as well. Mostly, they seem to be interested in just one of our females (Shelby)...they leave the other 2 alone. I often wondered if her spay was not complete and she still sheds some hormones. Of course, she is not happy when this happens, and will howl her head off in indignation.
