Today, out of the blue, my Whiskers REAPPEARED! Just like that! He reappeared just as he disappeared....without warning and with no clues! Oh, I am so relieved he is not dead but very much alive. I dared get as close to him as possible carrying a bowl of food, and the only thing I can visibly see is that he has a wound on the bridge of his nose.
There are happy endings! Even on April Fool's Day!
I'm so happy for you, it must have lightened the burden considerably. I'm glad that fox left him alone (at least alone enough to survive with merely a nose-wound).
Will he not come up to you, or come in the house? He look hungry? Will he come back? *bounces around* He knew to come home! Yay for happy endings!!!
LOL @ MLK! No, he won't come into the house and yes, he was hungry, BUT he looked like he has been fed well! That puzzles me. Or, what if he is a she and (gulp) pregnant? OH! I've gone that route years ago and ended up catching all 4 babies and Mom and had them all fixed by Feral Focus. Oh boy, I don't know what to feel right now! LOL LOL LOL I am just so glad this cat is ALIVE!!!!
I really hope the red fox has forgiven us our anger when he was thought to have eaten Whiskers. For the mysteries of Nature.....who can figure????
Well, we, errmmm, we fed the fox, right? Not shot it or anything?
Guilty until proven innocent! I mean... well, hmmm. I'll try to be nicer to foxes. Even though I suspect I am feeding more than 1 with the food I leave out at night. All I'm missin' now is the neon sign.
Doin' a big happy dance over here that Whiskers is alive and came to say hi!

No, we did not physically harm the fox, but I do know he felt our anger towards him for doing something he didn't even do. Imagine how this guy felt on that day, when all these years he has been welcomed here and all of a sudden we turned on him and shouted at him???? Looking back now, I feel foolish and wish I could take back my angry thoughts I projected towards him.
For those of you who think I am making a big deal over nothing, this property has been a wild animal sanctuary for years, and the animals know it. I am really hoping that they all still feel the love and safety here, and we did not blow it. Working with wild animals is a PRIVILEGE and an HONOR. Animals do not trust easily, and when they do, it is for life.
I'll be out gardening today and I will be keeping an eye open for a flash of red that signifies my friend the fox is back. And he is my friend. I know what I sound like, believe me, for if I spoke like this to a "professional" doctor he would seriously have me in a hospital for a psyche consultation.
All I can say.....when St. Francis of Assisi was alive, the local townspeople deemed him a lunatic, yet, after his death, the church declares him not only a saint but the patron saint of animals. Go figure! So, I am in good company.....I'd rather be walking St. Francis' shoes then anyone else's.
