Not to start an argument, but it doesn't sound like those pigeons in pieces dealt with the hawk(s) very well.

Of course some will be killed by predictors, or there would be no predators. But they all stay in balance. Their numbers stay stable. Cat's are well known to tip the balance. Cats are not native to the USA.

Neither are starlings or house sparrows, yet we're overrun with them.

Which has nothing to do with our native song birds. Cats don't go out of their way to kill introduced species. They kill birds indiscriminately.

Our bird population has gone down in this country, not only because of past pesticide use, but because of the common house cats people selfishly allow to roam. Cats that hunt will also damage the environment in other ways. They kill squirrels, young rabbits, snakes, lizards and other native fauna. Anyone online or who owns a radio or TV would know this and keep their hunters indoors. Neighbors should also be considered. I've suffered our neighbor's cat for years now. I'm almost glad their cat is now missing.
One of my cats was outside and surviving for long enough to become a mouser. She is an inside cat now, and hasn't shown any interest whatsoever in going outside, but she has caught a few mice that found their way inside. Hasn't taught the kittens though. My other cat tried it and showed me her mouse, in the bedroom. Then, having shown it off, she let it go. Right into the closet...

We have a lot of ferals here and a few which are simply outside cats. I have noticed that there seems to be no drop in birds, since there are high trees, but few mice and other rodents. I also have two beagles, so if its not a dog or cat and we're on a walk with a leash the NOSE rules. No way I could ever let her out in a yard that was not very very well fenced with digging controls or she'd be out tracking halfway across town. (well, its not a terribly large town)
