Interesting.....I never thought of it in terms of "cliques"...I always considered it "diversity"...
I prefer to shy away from the "diversity" term because in most cases, it has NOTHING to do with diversity.
Republicans may at one time said that Reagan was the most loved. But Dems would say no.
Democrats would say that the Kennedys are the most love and are America's Royal Family, but Republicans would say no.
Athletes may say that Michael Jordon or Walter Payton are most loved but womens groups and/or non sports people would say no.
Investors/Businessmen may say Warren Buffet or Bill Gates are most loved.
Proponents of free speech may say Larry Flint.
So really, it isnt about diversity (as most people use the term diversity now days to imply racial and sexual orientations) so "cliques" IMO is more important.
If you go back and think of Americans in the past, you would probably have to say Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King were the most loved. Of those living today, I would think that its maybe Muhammad Ali but again, there would be some groups who would say absolutely not.
But, the country is more diverse than generations ago - we have immigrants coming from a much wider group of countries and situations than we have had in the past. And many people are holding on to their culture rather than becoming "Americanized" as was popular of immigrants in the past. I'm not making a judgement on whether this is a good or a bad thing (probably some of each), but I do think it accounts for some of why people admire certain characteristics in others....What I admire in a person will most likely be vastly different than what someone from a different cultural background and life experience than I have. In smaller countries that share a common history and culture, it makes sense that their heroes will be similar.

Or what about Bill Clinton? Aside from his personal immorality, he is and was a great statesman. Ronald Reagan was a great orator and was able to make the country feel safe, even if they were opposed to him politically.
