Well to be fair Madonna and Janet Jackson were not the best technical voices either, but they coud sell a song which is what I think Rihanna has going for herself. Plus they had that It factor and I think Rihana has that too. It's not like labels can slap hit songs on any hot chick and create a star. They try all the time and fail miserably because not all pretty girls are star material.

But what Rih doesn't have is a lot of substance or creativity to her music, she's not a great live performer, she doesn't make any statement bigger than "I'm hot, let's have sex". That's why she'll fade away despite the mega hits IMO. The most unique thing she has going for herself is her fashion sense and that won't get you in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

ETA: Rihanna is indeed a worldwide star on quite the hit making streak. She holds some kind of record for number ones or something.

So what? That's hardly a mark of talent in this day and age when the idiots of the Jersey Shore and the Kardashians are famous. The real talent is outside of the scope of the top 40, for the most part.

Huh? If anything tney are both equally famous.

But put it this way: 20 something years ago, New Kids On The Block were worldwide hit making superstars. Are they considered legends now? There you go.

Lmao, not even close
Since society now uses the term celebrity so loosely, it makes sense they'd do he same with legendary.

Rihanna belongs in the same category as JLo. Both are not strong live performers. Both have weak voices. Both are revered more for their fashion and style then their vocal talent.

If Rihanna is smart (and that is debatable) she will go the same route and create a clothing line, perfume line, etc so that the revenue will continue after her songs stop selling and the next flavor hits the scene.
