Someone like Usher, who signed on Justin Beiber, or Jay-Z, who signed on Rhianna, would make more sense.

Then again, American Idol has LONG stopped being show about producing a singer capable of selling records and concert seats and has devolved into a popularity contest where the winner is often not the best singer and they disappear from the spotlight as soon as their first single pull in disappointing numbers.
Mariah Carey is a professionally trained singer with allegedly a 5 octave range. Rihanna can't sing for **** and she is a singles artist. AI is based on vocal abilities; she wouldn't make it past the first panel.

Usher and Jay-Z should be pummeled not praised for discovering Bieber and Rhianna.

I don't watch AI, never got into it, so I don't really care who is hired as a judge. What gets me is the outrageous sums of money these people are making.

No, I'm not bitter...!

I disagree. Mariah Carey has produced, wrote and sang her own songs into mega hits. She is a legend. Randy was also her producer. So AI has that producer part covered. Usher and Jay Z would be good for the same reasons Mariah is a good choice but not because of Rihanna and J. Bieber. Rihanna started off as a great, talented singer but she has turned into a sex slave artist.

AI isn't based on vocal talents otherwise plenty of vocally talented contestants like Jennifer Hudson would have won. The fact the the public is allowed to vote kills your point b/c the average tween texting to vote wouldn't know an octave from an octopus.

When this show first came on, I thought the idea of American Idol was to choose a star, someone capable of selling records and selling out concerts. I don't disagree w/ you about Rhianna's voice, but she sells albums and concert seats. Compare her sales to Taylor Hicks, Fantasia, or some other winners of AI. So few of the winners can be consider idols and many aren't even that successful in the long run.

Old enough to not care about these two.

You guys truly don't get it, do you. It's not about talent. I never claimed those two had talents. American Idol isn't even about talent when you think about it. It's about money. It's about how many albums this recording artist can sell, how many sold out concerts they can sell out worldwide. Despite their dubious talents, Rhianna and Justin Beiber are successful. Their singles regularly top the charts, their albums sell quite well, they win awards, and their concerts are attended in large numbers. Few singers out there, including, unfortunately, the ones whose vocal talents could blow these two out of the water, can claim the same success they have. And on some level, Usher and Jay-Z has been key to their success. If they can do this for two talentless hacks, imagine what they could do with real talent? Still not sure what it is Mariah Carey can do for the contestants that will land them as much success as Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson have had.

People don't go on this show to hear singing advice from pop stars, they go on this show to BECOME pop (or rock, country, R&B, etc) stars.

Hence why I said kind of as I truly don't know much about MC and didn't know she also produced. Hopefully she can give them enough advice to make sure they're actually successful. AI hasn't produced a successful winner in years and I truly believe part of that reason has been the increased focus on celebrity judges (really, Ellen DeGeneres?) and Ryan Secreast and less focus on making these winners marketable.
