I don't care for a lot of modern music, all drums and a lot of screeching mostly. I like melody and things that lift the human spirit. I like subtlety. I like to actually hear the lyrics. I like to fall asleep at night to music and usually listen to classical or to music of my parent's era.
I like actors who do not over act. I think some actors in Breaking Bad were great at that. Walter, Skyler, Gus, Mike were great at that. Of course, they needed the backdrop of the others who were emoting. Clint Eastwood could convey a lot with just subtle movement.
It really goads me when the age of an actor (and sometimes the attractiveness) really do not fit the part they are playing. 'Scandal' comes to mind, but there are many.
I like it when people who would be relegated to playing character parts in the past (because they are not classically 'pretty') are given juicy roles and succeed. Look at the Ray Donovan actors, and in Homeland Carrie often neglects makeup - the way a woman in her position might actually do. Boardwalk Empire is full of interesting actors who do a great job and are not 'pretty'.
The only woman who I can remember seeing who is gorgeous and can convincingly play a tough role in spite of that (I don't know how she does it) is Rhona Mitra.
I think, on the whole, if an actor has any chance of being any good, he has to have the sort of mind that is curious and observant and analytical concerning human behavior. That, and empathy for characters in all walks of life - and a lot of life experience. There are people who have experienced much and learned little from it, no?
Many are so much younger than me that I don't watch their shows/movies and don't know who they are
or follow their careers....not saying they aren't good, just a much younger generation. (Some shows we
do watch, like Big Bang Theory, and enjoy...they are about the age of our kids)
My wife and I watch maybe 4 series on Dish, and when they are off untill the Fall startup, we seldom watch TV except IFC, and Sundance. Like other posters pointed out, a lot of the perfomers, today, that give of themselves to the public lack the depth, and ability to convince the viewers of the sincerity of what they are trying to convey to the audience. Possibly because the performers from days past honed their skills and abilities on Broadway, and other venues that taught them how to reach the audience without the aid of cameras, and other devices. They had to stand, or fall, on talent alone.
For many, it has very little to do with talent and everything to do with antics that keep them getting lots of publicity.
Sounds like the Kardashians and Lohan to me
