I find him amusing, but often the humor used in his movies doesn't carry for 90 minutes. I think he is better in 5-15 minute skits like SNL...like most comedians.

But I laughed in Anchorman, Elf, Talledaga Nights, Wedding Crashers, Old School, and Zoolander. He doesn't carry all these films but I think his characters are good.

Its hard to be funny for over an hour.

I agree. Odd that Mark Wahlberg's comedic performance actually overshadowed Will and made this so-so flick enjoyable. The highlight of that movie was Samuel Jackson and Dwayne Johnson's idiotically funny, characters who thought they were invincible and took the shortcut downstairs! That scene had me in chuckles!

Funny, I say the same thing about Jack Black. They both made 1 or 2 flicks that were funny where both were leads but typically I find them much funnier in movies where they have small or supporting roles instead of lead.
Examples: Jack Black in Orange County, High Fidelity and Anchorman
Will Ferrell in Old School and Wedding Crashers.

Otherwise, they both seem to be playing the same, easily identifiable, 2-3 characters in every one of their movies.

So very true, he plays essentially the same character in every movie.

He is truly one note.

Culp. That's the only character I like him as. He's hilarious as Culp.

The rest of his offerings: stink! stunk! stank!

For me, I really liked him in Everything Must Go. He was actually tolerably better in a comedic/dramatic role than some of his other failed comedy attempts. One of the most wasted attempts was his guest spot with Bear Grylls on Man vs. Wild. We watched it one time with clenched teeth.
