There's a good reason you didn't know it, because Raquel Welch isnt from South America.(). Like [gasp!] many Americans, one or both parents immigrated here. She was born and raised in Chicago before moving to California, for gawd's sake. And her mother might as well have come over on the Mayflower.

Yeesh.

Elvis Presley didn't have Black history in his heritage but he did recognize a Jewish background which he never kept a secret. Many celebrities in the past hid theirs.

The singer Tom Jones says he's sent in his DNA to find out. Yes, he did say that.

But maybe he's joking...and all of us Boomer black folk do appreciate the joke. Back in the 60s and 70s, with his singing style and curly hair, we were wondering....

Ava Gardner dated Sammy Davis, Jr. Maybe that's why some thought she was also black.

Guess what? If you go back 100,000 years or so, all of our ancestors came from Africa. So, in a sense, you're African American!

Ava Gardner and Elvis Presley had Melungeon ancestry which is tri-racial (indigenous, African and European). Ava Gardner even played a mixed race (African ancestry) woman in the film Show Boat.

If you don't know you have black ancestry, you're not "passing for white."

"Passing for white" is a conscious decision, an intended deception.

Heather Locklear has some Native American ancestry (the Lumbee tribe). She certainly isn't "hiding" it.

There is an American gymnast named Ashton Locklear. She is a World Champion with the rest of the 2014 American women's gymnastics team, and also was the U.S. Champion on uneven bars.

I am not sure if or how she is related to Heather (they do share the same last name), but she is also a member of the Lumbee Tribe. She lives in North Carolina and the state recognizes this tribe (most of them live in North Carolina). It is the largest tribe in North Carolina. Locklear is a common surname in the area.
