For what it's worth, Hoffman's addiction started while he was enrolled in NYU's drama school, and he went to rehab after graduating (at age 22). He didn't relapse until May of last year. He stayed clean for a very long time.

I hate that. One of our best actors in these times. The fame, the money, the success...still not enough I guess.

what an incredible talent.
Not our place to judge.
We don't have to die for anyone else. Addiction of any type is difficult for all.
May he now Rest In Peace.
Prayers for his family and friends.

Thanks for entertaining us all Mr. Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead: Actor Dies At 46 In New York Apartment

Self destruction by those who have everything going for them.

Amazing. Obviously a good career, three children, does not cure an addiction.

He could have reached out...

That is very sad. And sad that *some* in America demonize the psychologically afflicted. men especially tend to use substances to stuff their emotions. My ex has cancer now bcs of complications like that.

Truly sad RIP Mr Hoffman.

I was just going to say this! Very old looking for a guy not even in his fifties. Guess drug abuse will do that to someone.

On the contrary, it's people who think like this one in the above quote that are bad people.

I always thought he looked like that because of his weight/eating habits.

This is sad but addicts need to surround themselves with people who are not users or enablers. The problem with addicts is they tend to be people pleasers with low self esteem. I feel more sad for PSHoffman's family and friends that loved him. RIP.

I had a true "WTF?!" moment when I heard the news! Sad because he was not only a great actor but very young too. I do agree though, I was shocked the second time when I found out about his age!

I loved him even in small roles like the one in Almost Famous or MI3. Comedy, drama, action, good guy, bad guy, he nailed every role he played.

Also, I think he was the first actor to use the term "sharted" in a movie.

RIP Phillip.
