It depends on the Medium.

For movie comedy? In no particular order: Steve Martin, Whoopi, Gene Wilder, John Candy, Woody Allen.
For Stand Up? I'd go with Eddie Murphy, Steven Wright, and Bob Newhart.

Jack Benny
Nipsy Russel
Bob Hope

People like that. Straight, intense humor. Even though I grew up when Red Skelton was still on the air, I couldn't get into him as funny because he has to laugh at his own jokes to make the point.

I read this and find it sad that a younger generation has no understanding of real comedy and it's roots.Chaplin, Buster Keaton, W.C. Fields,Laurel and Hardy the Marx Brothers,Abbot and Costello.Lucille Ball,Sid Caesar.......it goes on.Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner the 2000 year old man is classic and people have never heard of it.

I used to love Bernie Mac, and that sketch about his little nieces and nephew who came to be with him via their dad bailing from court and mom drug dependent.
I watched it again a few years ago, and realized how absolutely abusive he sounded. Sounded, not was. I don't like that humor anymore, biting, sardonic, sarcastic. Even Dave Chappelle sounds like that. I have fallen away from the status quo.
