Fans are in shock after the sudden death of Australian singer and “American Idol” finalist Michael Johns, who passed away on Friday at age 35 from a blood clot in his ankle. The news sent people reeling, wondering how a simple issue could have turned fatal.
Johns, who achieved fame after an excellent run on the talent series in 2008, went on to write songs for films and other artists. Last week in Los Angeles, he reportedly twisted his ankle and went to see a doctor because of swelling and bruising that traveled up his leg.
I read that story and it is very scary. Who hasn't twisted their ankle slightly at times while walking, but I never thought about the possibility of a blood clot forming and traveling from such a minor injury. I don't know how bad the twisted ankle was but I think when you walk sometimes you come down hard on an ankle and you just pop back up, but it hurts for a while. He's such a young man, too and sounds like he didn't have any serious medical conditions or anything related to clotting issues. A few years back, I read a story of a newsman who was in a convoy and he was stuck in the same sitting position for hours and when he finally exited the tank, he passed out and never regain consciousness - he died soon after. They said he had a blood clot in his leg that traveled to his heart, I think. I wonder if both of these men had some kind of pre-existing condition that was triggered or is it something that just happens, even to the healthiest people.
I didn't know him, but his passing shows how quickly a little injury can turn bad. I don't understand how the doctor who saw him at the ER could let him go without investigating further.
I read an update that Michael Johns had consumed a large amount of alcohol before he died. I don't know if that anything to do with his blood clot or if the alcohol interacted with any meds he was taking. I do think that the doctor should of ordered an ultrasound, but than again he probably thought it was nothing serious. I don't know what the protocol is for ordering further tests, like an ultrasound.
I didn't know him either till I read the story about how he died. He was on American Idol. I don't watch American Idol. I think he had a promising career.

I don't know of any doctor that would order an ultrasound for a twisted ankle, unless there appeared to be compromised blood flow.
