Emmy Award-winning actor Edward Herrmann has died. He was 71.
His manager, Robbie Kass, confirmed his death to CBS News, noting, "Edward Herrmann, besides being an accomplished actor, was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man. He will be sorely missed."
TMZ was the first to report the news, revealing that Hermann had been battling cancer and was in a hospital ICU over the past month. He died Wednesday morning at a New York hospital.
Never really a star, he was nonetheless everywhere.
I remember him in an old episode of M*A*S*H, and from Annie. He was great in the fun take on the vampire genre The Lost Boys. He was ubiquitous in our living room on Gilmore Girls, which I never watched but which my daughter adored. He'd show up in Law & Order and 30 Rock. And on countless other shows.
And the voice work! He must have done half of the non-fiction out there on various cable channels. And his was the voice of the audio version of Ron Chernow's exceptional Washington: A Life, which I enjoyed immensely - all 34 CDs worth!
Saw the news on FB, which saddens me as I had noticed him over the years/decades & liked seeing/hearing him on the screen.
If it hadn't been for him & Jane Alexander playing FDR & Eleanor, I would not likely have watched the tv-movies about the Roosevelts.
Also enjoyed his voice-over work for PBS programs. He was in so many things that I've watched/heard, couldn't list them all.
He actually was wonderful in "Gilmore Girls". (I DID watch it. It really wasn't a "teen" show, though many teens did watch it.) The casting on that show was wonderful, but the inclusion of Mr. Herrmann was genius.
I remember seeing him on an episode of M*A*S*H where he played a surgeon who cracked under pressure. He also had a role in the movie The Paper Chase, which ironically aired on Turner Classic Movies the day he died.
When you needed a guy to play the clueless, pampered WASP character, Edward Herrmann was your man.
IMO, he singlehandedly made rimless eyeglasses uncool :-)
RIP Mr. Herrmann.
