Yes, Michael did get lots of attention. Maybe it's because I live in Minneapolis and have met Prince on 3 different occasions that this seems so much more. Here in the city it is so much more because he stayed "one of ours". He always returned here - his recording studio was/is here - and people would comment on how he was just a regular guy when they'd run into him. He didn't talk much, people knew this, but he was still friendly in his own way.
The bridge will stay lit purple for 1 week. I'm also impressed with the cover of the New Yorker.
It's sad that he died alone. Maybe if someone had been with him this could have turned out different.
For a guy that was 5'2" he was bigger than life and I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention his size because he just seemed bigger.
Yes, I have always admired him for staying home and not moving to fast pace NY or LA. Been a fan and admirer for a long time. Saw him in concert during his Purple Rain reign.
Suppose hip replacement, what is up with 50-60 yrs olds having hip replacement........it's not that old, really it isn't! My girlfriend just went in for one......heck she is ONLY 54 and the doctors have certainly given her some heavy pain meds, but she refuses to take very many.........she is not on tour at 57. These drugs are highly addictive, I doubt Prince was a drug user.......prescription drugs are suppose to make us handle pain, not need more pain meds.
From what I've read, Prince had damaged his hips from doing so many basically gymnastic moves in very high platform boots on stage.
Since I am tall and don't wear platform boots and don't perform on stage anyway and will probably NEVER jump off a stage prop making some sort of gymnastic move wearing platform boots once, let alone thousands of times, I doubt that a hip replacement is in my future anytime soon (I'm 54 and have no hip pain at all). But to answer your question, I can't imagine why there's an increase in hip replacements with younger adults (wasn't aware there was an increase).
I personally doubt that we will find that Prince was in a long term habit of abusing any sort of drugs. My guess is that he had some sort of medical condition that became so painful that he was over using prescription drugs, and that this situation was fairly recent.

Just a guess though.
In the drug saturated studio world of the eighties, Prince was well known in the industry as an abstainer of everything. Pretty rare in those days. He rarely slept, and would book one of the big studios in every city he played in while on tour. Engineers would be hired round the clock to wait in the studio in case he came in, which could be at any time of day or night. (This was obviously prior to pro tools and everyone being able to carry a studio in their laptop or back pocket).
He was relentlessly prolific and had a gallizion ideas in his head that he had to get out, and there wasn't a person alive that could keep up with him.
I saw him at an industry event in 1996 in a small club in downtown LA. He came on at 1:30am and played until 5, by which time most of the wimpy label people had left and he played to about 50 of us, just jamming with the New Power Generation. It was transcendent. I have never felt so privileged.

Something here about Prince I read this morning. Who knows how truthful it is?
Sorry, but I'm finding all the public hue-and-cry a bit over the top... When was the last time anyone popped in a Prince CD, seriously??? Maybe a few die-hard fans, but you would think he was the most important person on the planet to watch the national media or Facebook hysteria... A few good songs, sure, but pretty mediocre if you ask me... Nothing special about his voice or looks. "When Doves Cry" was a good song. That's all I got! As for "breaking boundaries," didn't David Bowie do that long before Prince? I don't remember all this hair-pulling going on for him... Heaven help us when Paul McCartney dies! The most interesting thing here is speculating whether or not he was a victim of the Illuminati.
