I knew he had an alcohol related history but didnt know he had caused a crash killing a man in Italy in the 60s.. in other sites it tells that it was drink related and he was charged with manslaughter.. Holden died alone , drunk after banging his head on his room wall so badly that he bled to death.. He wasnt found for four days.. scroll down this page half way down and you ll read the very small item about Holden in Italy.. http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1...-traffic-death

William Holden's alcohol problems were legion, and well-known back then. And I'd heard of the slap on the wrist he got for that alcohol-related death abroad. He certainly didn't bring it up, but it was no secret.

Like those of today, some of yesterday's generation of actors should've been in jail, too.

Yes, the booze didn't help his relationship with Stefanie Powers, and they had some blowouts. I suspect she gave as good as she got.

She's perpetuated this "love of my life" line, helped by the fact that she was bequeathed most of his money. The fact is, they weren't together by the time he died. He'd resurrected a romance with someone he'd known for decades ("Pat" somethingorother, not an actress) and word was that they were going to marry.

In any event, he died alone. The coroner estimated he'd been dead four days before he was found--by an apartment manager, I think. Sad.

Loved him in Picnic. I'm looking forward to seeing that movie around Labor Day, when they usually air it somewhere.

I thought William Holden was very sexy. I didn't realize how he died. Sad.
