sometimes I see a list of the latest celebrities and I don't know anything about any of them. Back in the 50s and 60s everyone knew all the actors and actresses and singers etc. Is it just me or do others experience the same thing.

It's the same with me, though I know who Mylie Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Beyonce are, though I am not fans of theirs.

It's probably my age...

No, it's not really unusual, especially since it appears to be easier to be a "celebrity" these days with reality TV and social media.

What I find unusual are the people who brag about how they don't know any celebrities. Do they really think people are impressed by that?

A lot of people don't care at all about celebrities. I'm one of them. There are very few I know by name or face. I pick movies or music because of the movie or music, not necessarily who is involved.

To me, following celebrities like some people do is really creepy stalking type behavior.

Yep, gotta agree. Aging. As you get older you just see them as people. Nothing special, another human being. I get more excited over baby animals.

I'd say the sad part is that I'd think more people can name celebrities than who their senators and representatives are.

I think it's a little pretentious as well. Exactly what is interesting about not knowing popular culture of the society in which one lives? It doesn't mean you have to obsess about it!

I don't think it's age related at all. It's a conscious choice to avoid it as much as possible, and that person might be of any age. I think it's often said for "shock value". I doubt anyone is really that out of touch with pop culture, unless they're living off the grid somewhere, or are making a decided effort to avoid all media and contact with the rest of society.

But back to the OP question. I think it's unusual.

I think a big part of it is that it's so much easier to be a celebrity in these days of social media, online music sources, 500 million cable channels, etc.
