I was a little surprised by the MDMA. That's not traditionally been a drug of our generation.

So a person, no matter what good they've done in their life, no matter what their accomplishments, is automatically judged worthless because they used drugs?

And then someone like you, a not-very-nice, unkind, self-righteous person, is totally worthwhile just because you didn't?

Nah, I don't think so.

I was disappointed to hear that she had drugs in her system, but it's been a very long struggle for her so I'm not entirely surprised. I guess I've mostly felt sad at how badly she aged because of the years of addiction. She had been so bright and funny and articulate when younger. We were the same age, and she seemed much older.

Which is something most people gloss over, not stopping to think about how it would be to deal with an undiagnosed mental illness.

IMO, just like Amanda Bynes, the drug abuse started because of mental illness.

In Amanda's case, she was lucky that it happened to her in a time where what was happening was recognized and treated in a timely manner......Carrie wasn't that lucky.

Yes. 40 years ago people weren't as open about mental illness. They still aren't, but it's changing. My daughter has bipolar disorder. It usually manifests in young adulthood. She did not touch alcohol or drugs until she was 20 or 21 because her dad is an alkie (who probably also has undiagnosed bipolar disorder). When she did, she went downhill fast. Fortunately, though scarily, she ended up hospitalized, evaluated, and treated and is managing her illness.

She is open about her illness because she doesn't want others to feel shame over it. Some of the young people in the hospital with her were rejected or their illnesses dismissed by their families.
