I think my favorite of his roles was Montrose in "Rob Roy." But he will forever be enshrined for his performance in the chest bursting scene of "Alien." I think that changed sci-fi/horror forever.

Don't forget his role as Winston Smith in 1984. Really nailed it, like every other performance he did. One of my favorite actors.

No matter how many times I watch that scene, I still get nervous beforehand. His portrayal of the agony seems so real.

I know I'm late on it but one other word on John Hurt is this: He played The Horned King, the evil villain in Disney's animated film The Black Cauldron. He will be missed forever.
