I read that story in Freakonomics. They say the story had its root in the band Van Halen for its 1982 tour checking to see if the venue actually read the contract so the act would know going in if they had to double their effort making sure the sound and lighting system was prepared to their specifications and that they were not just set up with the standard package for the venue.
