Haruo Nakajima, the actor who stomped in a rubber suit to portray the original 1954 Godzilla, helping to make the Japanese monster an iconic symbol of the nuclear era, has died. He was 88. Nakajima's daughter Sonoe Nakajima says he was hospitalized last month and died of pneumonia Monday, the AP reports. Haruo Nakajima was a stunt actor in samurai films when he was approached to take the role of Godzilla, which may be Japan's most successful cultural export.
RIP Haruo. I grew up with Godzilla and the Kaiju on TV. Many Saturdays watching and eating Capt Crunch cereal out of the box. Even as an adult I watch it on cable and get much joy seeing it today.
This actor helped create one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema, and no one knew what he looked like.
Thank you sir, for putting on that hot sweaty suit for so many years and making this young boy so happy with your stomping on cardboard Tokyo.
But what about Ultraman and all of his man-in-a-rubber-suit opponents? Any word on them?
Or Gamera too. I agree.
These actors and filmmakers gave us not just fun, but happy memories. Good as gold!
