I don't think Hugh Hefner knew how big the porn industry was going to become, when he published the first copy of Playboy. His magazine had to have good articles along with the pictures to class it up and make it acceptable. Sophisticated might be a good word to describe the subscribers he was looking for, the white collar swinging bachelor. The nude shots were seen as very conservative by the late 70's and his competitors were stealing away his subscribers. For a time I think his playboy clubs were bringing in a lot of money, so there was no need for him to butt heads with the Supreme Court and try to redefine what obscene meant. I think it was wise of him to sit back and watch Larry Flynt take a beating and get thrown in jail. I think Flynt pinned the new nickname for Playboy, "Playbore" for it's under stimulating content.
Larry Flynt was just plain nuts, perhaps some of you may have seen "The People vs Larry Flynt", he did all sorts of innovations with Hustler, full spread shots, dirty cartoons that were so funny you wanted to buy the magazine just for the cartoons, lol. There was a scratch 'N sniff picture in one issue, you can probably guess what that was about, another issue had the Larry Flynt for president bumper sticker. Oh, and that one section where women from all over the country were encouraged to send in their own nude photos, and post them in a section of the magazine called "The Beaver Hunt". I almost liked those better than the centerfolds sometimes because those were just average looking women like the ones next door, whom certainly were not professional models or getting any real pay (I think they got 100 bucks or something). It had a political section too, with the "A-hole of the month" article, where he railed in a profanity laced tirade about his critics, congressman and politicians, people like Pat Boone and the one who fired back, Jerry Falwell, whom took him to court and cost him millions in attorney fees, even tho Jerry lost his case in the Supreme Court.
I'm kinda glad porn became an internet thing, I remember all those tacky XXX stores and signs that popped up all over the place in the 80's. Many supermarkets and some very public places would stock those magazines in plain view on the top shelf of the rack, and those kiddies were reaching up, lol. But if they got home with one, they were reaching down, lol.

Actually that first magazine used a stock photo of Marilyn that he bought for $200. He stated in a Piers Morgan interview he never met Marilyn as she died 9 years after his first magazine was published but he had only spoken with her on the phone once. He did assemble the first copy on his kitchen table though.
He almost destroyed her career using her nude photos (without her consent) on the cover of his first issue.
I have his show "Playboy After Dark" volume 1 & 2 on DVD.
I wish they'd release more. That show had a ton of great guests and musical artists.

Canned Heat with a chat including a very young future Bionic Woman Lindsay Wagner.
I forgot to mention the Dear Granny section of Hustler was pretty good too, sort of a Dr. Ruth Q & A type thing, and granny's nose had a cartoon penis too. She knew how cut to the chase like the Fruitcake Lady on Jay Leno, without the censorship.

He was a perfect example of how someone doesn't really change as they age. Even at 88 when he got married to a 27 year old, he still had the same huge libido as he did when he was in his 20s (and probably even earlier).
