He was another Richard Dawson, a Brit through and through who could easily pass for native born. I always found that interesting about him, the fact that he dropped his accent.

Dropping his Manchester accent is likely what helped get Mr. Mahoney film/television roles. He sounded like any other working/middle class guy from say New York, or Chicago.

Here is Mr. Mahoney's first film role in Moonstruck, you'd never guess he was a Brit:

Late Mr. Mahoney was also a survivor of colon cancer which left him wearing a colostomy bag. This was back in the 1980's or roundabouts so all during Frasier he would have been using the device.

A great interview from way back.

Have always admired not just Mr. Mahoney's acting skills, but that he never went "Hollywood". The man valued his privacy and appreciated his blessings.

*RIP*
Thanks for posting this.

I liked him a lot. Saw him interviewed and he seemed like a genuinely nice man. Sad.

I always thought he was brilliant as Diane Court's dad in Say Anything ... .

The scene where he's trying to buy a set of luggage for his daughter and finds himself hitting it off with the attractive store clerk, until his credit card is declined because of his secret double life ... unforgettable.

A fine character actor, and for me, the best part of "Frazier".

One of the greats! Got a bit of a late start, but made up for it and had splendid innings.

Mr. John Mahoney was one of the few rare actors that scored "pay dirt" with a television series (or whatever) that pretty much set him up for life. Thus he could then concentrate on acting in of itself as a craft. This as opposed to so many others that are jobbing actors turning out quite a bit of dreck because they need the money.

Sadly, I only know of the late John Mahoney's work via Frasier, which is my favourite comedy of all time.

May he RIP.
