No, you have to be mediocre-looking for the most part.
"Distractedly beautiful" is not good for movies. The audience can't concentrate on movie, they're too busy looking at the guy or girl. Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot comes to mind, you're distracted with how insanely hot she is.
And you definitely don't want an actress with big you-know-whats, to be in your movie.

Absolutely, attractive actors ruin a movie or a TV show. "Bay Watch" is the best example, a total commercial failure...Who watches a movie or listens to a record just because the cast/singer is hot anyways? :/

All I saw was the thread title, and Steve Buscemi was the first thing that came to my mind. So I had to chuckle when I saw your post!

I thought that the OP said "good looking." He's a great actor and a nice guy, but good looking? Not really. (And given his average looks, more power to him that he's done so well in Hollywood.)

D J Qualls. And believe it or not.. he modeled for Prada and Calvin Klein.
I'd have to say that there are infinitely more good looking people in Hollywood than the character mug tho. Many don't even get there until they've had all sorts of things done to their face and body for just that reason and as a couple of other's said... I think most of the mega stars lean toward good looking, particularly the females. Just google 'top female stars' and look at the list of faces that come up. With the exception of Meryl Streep they're basically all what many consider to be hotties. And yes, I agree, all of them aren't considered all that to all people. Just as I agree with the previous poster that I've never considered Hanks to be a great looking guy. Not necessarily ugly but no, I wouldn't look at him and peg him as a star but yep.. he's a helluva actor.
Oh.. and loved Ernest Borgnine!

Exactly.
He never would have made it if he wasn't so gorgeous...
