I saw Cloris Leachman on an episode of The Untouchables, from the late 50's and was pleasantly surprised at how good she looked back then. I was going to mention her, but for this thread, they should be homely for all time, she was getting rough by the MTM/Phyllis era. Another woman who was gorgeous before it all went wrong, Diana Muldaur, who played the doctor in season 2 of Star Trek Next Generation. Shelly Winters looked good once upon a time, as did Betty Davis, but not so much in the Alfred Hitchcock days, lol. Those pictures of a young Phyllis Diller really surprised me. Yes, Tine Daly.....woof woof, but to be fair, she did do a love scene with Clint Eastwood in that one Dirty Harry movie, and he didn't flinch or put a bag over her head or anything, so that was a pretty good score for Tyne Daly.

Here's a few more, just for fun

Marcia Wallace, the woman who played the secretary on Bob Newhart

Billy Barty for sure.

Ed Asner never looked good.

Rosie O’Donnell...poster child for not looking good

Sally Struthers actually looked alright in the early 70s wearing those minis on All In the Family.
She didn’t age well....happens a lot unfortunately...look at Bridget Bardot
Bardot was a 1950s sex kitten...she actually looked even better in the 1960s...
by the early 1970s fading fast and she bailed on making movies about 1973 before her 40th birthday.

No, especially lately. I see a lot of ugly actors.

Phyllis Diller used to use the same laundromat as my mother-in-law before she hit it big. My MIL said that she would entertain the other housewives for hours. It didn't occur to anyone present that she was honing her stage act. My MIL also said that she was a rather attractive woman back in the day.

Phyllis Diller purposely made herself look bad/weird. In those days, comediennes were supposed to look weird and/or ugly and have an abrasive voice. Think Totie Fields. Cloris Leachman was known for being very good looking in her youth. She was a Miss Illinois and competed in Miss America in the 40s. Betty White was also a beauty. Sally Struthers was very pretty when she was young. I've met her a few times and she was very pretty in person.

Thats what I dont like about many popular movies today, the A list actors, (Bradley Cooper, Jenifer Lawrence, etc), they are all well above '10s', but cast to play normal looking people.

Not really but, if you are good looking then it's absolutely an advantage!

"Distractedly beautiful" is not good for movies. The audience can't concentrate on movie, they're too busy looking at the guy or girl. Wonder Woman with Gal Gadot comes to mind, you're distracted with how insanely hot she is.

And you definitely don't want an actress with big you-know-whats, to be in your movie.
I wasn’t at all distracted by Gal Gadot’s being distractingly beautiful in “Wonder Woman” and neither were any of my women friends. Her acting was perfect for the role.

Regardless as to whether or not an actress has “big you-know-what’s” (what are you, twelve years old?) if she can act she deserves the role.
