Sister: Kate Spade had mental illness years before suicide | The Kansas City Star

It seems as though Mrs. Spade suffered with severe anxiety as well as bipolar disorder. I don't own any Kate Spade items but I've always held a favorable impression of her. Her suicide has really saddened me.

Am watching NBC News right now. A quote from her brother, David. "It's a rough world out there people. Just try to hang on."

I'm very saddened by this news.

I think that was a quote from the actor, David Spade, who is her Brother in Law (something I did not know).

He is her brother in law. I always thought David was her brother too. Itís hard to imagine the depths of despair that would make a mother leave her child like that.

Tragic that she would NOT come out and seek help and in doing so could help so many in the world too..think about Betty Ford and her coming out with alcoholism.

No problem. I didn't know the two had any connection. I happened to mention it to my husband (who cares nothing about fashion or celebrities), and he said "Oh yeah, I thought they were brother and sister", like everybody should know that.

I had a different response written up, but I had to change it because it wasn't very nice. I will just say that although I do understand why some people feel driven to suicide, I think it's much less justifiable when you have dependent children.

I agree. To me, you don't literally crap on your children for the rest of their lives because Mommy wont seek help because she fears for HER BRAND. WTH is that???

Her husband was quoted today as saying she was in fact being treated with medication and help for anxiety and depression. A marital separation could certainly make those problems worse, but she was getting help. Depression can be lethally painful, to a famous person and not-famous person alike.
