[quote=malamute;20144943]You can't save a drug addict or alcoholic when they're messed up by trying to reason with them. It requires at least some time away from drugs and booze so that their minds can clear enough and yes that means you sometimes have to lock them up. Of course it's not the exact same thing as saving a swimmer, but it is in that the swimmer in too deep of water made a decision to go out too far. Same as the hikers who got themselves lost on a mountain, women who hook up with a man who beats them half to death or many people who got themselves into trouble.
The law and courts and jails and rehabs aren't for the people who are in very good control of their lives and who make the right decisions all the time.

What law have they broken that they should be charged with?
It sounds dangerously like committing people to state-run institutions against their will.

You can't force someone to clean up or get sober or whatever. That is a personal decision.
I didn't care for the choices she made, or the fact that her personal life was more notable than her music. That is unfortunate. It is not shocking. I am not going to dance on her grave.
With all the other things going on like congress' whizzing match, the famine in Somalia, nasty bad heat that is taking a toll, 93 people dead in Norway by gunman. IMO we have bigger things to worry about.

I really liked her music- and was always upset to see her spiraling downward. I didn't follow it all too closely but I thought that her parents seemed quite caring and loving (and normal). What a tragedy.

Same here.
She was really talented. What a waste.
She never found peace down here, but I hope she's in peace now...

Drugs might start out as a choice, but when it turns into full blown addiction, the person isn't "choosing" anymore. Their physiology/psychology has changed w/ the drug use.

Ya know....I was just thinking...
This may be some sort of blessing for the youth of today.
There are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many celebrity 'come-back' stories.
The kids today may think it's okay to do drugs---get hooked---find yourself--and get clean.
They go on TV and talk about it--they write songs about it---you name it--a celebrity has done it, went to rehab for it, came out and told everybody how good life is now they they're done with it.
Drugs are no joke--

I haven't heard it was suicide.Possibly an accidental overdose or it could have been her eating disorder-people die from that all the time too.Maybe she had a heart attack.
