Just realized that even though I'm not much of a movie goer, I've seen several of his movies--and they are among my all time favorites. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", "To Sir with Love", "Lillies of the Field", "A Raisin in the Sun", "In the Heat of the Night", and when I was a kid I saw "Blackboard Jungle."

Born in Miami while his parents were there selling tomatoes from their farm in the Bahamas. He was two months premature, not expected to survive. But he sure did live and returned to the Bahamas, returning to Florida to be raised by an older brother because he was such a brat! The brother said he was really strict with Sidney--it paid off.
Blackboard Jungle was groundbreaking at the time with Glenn Ford and of Course Sydney then made..To Sir With Love .. much the same type of movie..
