He sure was, I used to watch the Tonight show regularly. Every time I think of him I think of that big belly laugh of his, especially when Carson would do his Karnac the magnificent routine. One of the greats! RIP, Mr. McMahon.
There is a TV miniseries from 1962 titled "How the West Was Won." I really like it. It follows a family from before the Civil War up through modern day. There are lots of interesting characters. Spencer Tracy narrates it.
The thing is that when the show is almost over there is a layover on the screen....easing from photos of the yet to be charted trails in the US west into our modern highways. The folks we care about are gone. There is a sadness for me in that ending. Yes, it is also a beginning but it is sad to me remembering all that have gone before.
I have felt that way for several years now. Sinatra's death was a milestone and not a pleasant one for me. Peter Jennings' death hit me hard. Several more have also done that. The death of Ed McMahon has done it, too. This is a guy who was always there. He was always a cool drink of water in the middle of the desert. It's sad to see them go.
That is why I am so saddened by his death. He was one of the good guys I could always rely on.
