Tiger Woods has to come out of hiding and risk public humiliation with a full and candid explanation of his recent troubles before he can get on with his life and his golf, according to Butch Harmon. Harmon, who was his coach for 10 years, cannot understand why Woods has not faced the media since simultaneously crashing his car, his marriage and his spotless image outside his house in Florida six weeks ago.
"The golfing public would like to see Tiger Woods do a press conference," Harmon said. "To stand there in front of everybody, take his medicine, be humble, be embarrassed, be humiliated, and answer the questions. But where the hell is he? We could find Osama bin Laden easier than we can find Tiger Woods. How long can you spend on a yacht in the middle of the ocean?"
Tiger is obviously a very stubborn person that was so coddled and protected by his handlers for so long that he thought he'd be able to easily manage this crisis by saying nothing and it would all just blow over. That's either naive or stupid. Or both.
I can picture him sitting there with a pouty face while his entourage begs him to just "say something" to the public and his response is "Nobody forces me to do anything."
For some reason, I just don't seem him as a haggard mess "eating cereal and watching cartoons" all day and soul searching, but rather someone who's bouncing around "safe houses" and whatnot provided by his rich friends. This is a person that had no conscience when cheating on his wife for years with a bevy of women, perhaps while she was pregnant with their children. People don't grow scruples after getting caught. A burglar doesn't feel sad that he broke into your house when he's sitting in the pen, he feels sad that he got caught.
Eventually, some other shoe is going to drop: he's either going to reconcile with his wife or she will file for divorce and the press coverage will blow up again.
He was quick to issue press releases when it really started closing in on him and would behoove him to say something. The press is not going to let up and it only looks worse and worse for him the longer he hides out. A visit to Oprah in which he cries and says his father's illness and death coupled with other manufactured "issues" will win back some people; others will (rightfully, IMO) laugh it off for the farce it would be.
Golf writers may not ask him about this because 1) the PGA will hand down some edict barring them from doing so since Tiger is their cash cow; or 2) they will have their own self-interest in mind: if they ask, they'll probably never get an interview with Tiger again. The Enquirer and gossip reporters don't care. They will be at every tournament, press conference, benefit, and appearance that Tiger makes and be as relentless as ever.
