I actually feel sorry for Jessica Simpson! Your mileage may vary.
Of course the man has a right to his preferences, and a right to have his opinions published. I understand where you are coming from.
He's not the first white guy to try to be edgy by throwing around the N word.
For me, it actually was less the N word than the other stuff--the metaphors were clumsy rather than colorful.
Is Mayer the Great Satan of the music world? No.
He's just kind of a jerk.

Jessica?? Don't feel sorry for her! Her stock just went through the roof! I bet some folk are looking at Tony Romo and asking ...."Boy...what's yo' problem?"

Has anyone else heard about this? From the article:
-----When asked if black women try to get with him, John answered: "I don't think I open myself to it. My d### is sort of like a white supremacist. I've got a Benetton heart and a f####### David Duke ****. I'm going to start dating separately from my d###."
-----"Someone asked me the other day, 'What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?' And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n##### pass."

What a winner! His parents must be so pleased and proud.
He's a louse.

big difference between saying something in a song and saying something in a sit down interview
Mayer has always been a d-bag. funny thing is, I read somewhere that one reason he did this interview was to show he wasn't as much of a d-bag as tabloids portray him as. FAIL

Neither douchebag nor racist, he is a famous dude whose gives interviews on a near daily basis. One time- upon years of doing them- he said some dumb things. Tried to ironic and intellectualize a word that can't be. He had a bad day and said some kind of trashy and ill-considered stuff. I've had like three of them this week and it's not even over yet.
But alas, I'm sure the original poster on citi-data forums has never had such a day, nor uttered a regrettable comment.
The jealousy relative to all things celebrity is often overwhelming, particularly on the internet where people really let loose. But this thread wreaks of a whole new level of envy.
Kinda depressing to read.

Yep, there is a big difference. In an interview, you answer questions on the spot. In a song, you have to sit and think long and hard for weeks and months about what you want to say. I'd say the one saying racist things in a song is much worse than the one who blerted it out in an interview. But that's OK, I understand. Only white people can be called racist. Black rappers get a pass because they're black. Racial doublestandard.

Thinkin, I think Mayer has kind of a reputation for shooting off his mouth.
This is not an isolated incident.
one example
In his own words
Maybe he's not so much a jerk as a goofy guy with little impulse control?
He himself suggests that maybe he tries too hard.
I dunno, after reading some more about him, I do have more sympathy for him.

Of course *some* gangsta rap artists have used misogynist, racist, filthy language. Not every single one.
It seems to me that hip hop culture, and some of its excesses, came about at least in part because of oppression that helped create it in the first place.
Whenever this argument comes up, I always think about what Richard Pryor said.

So racism is excused if it's source is oppression? Glad to know you excuse the racism of my blond hair blue eyed cousins who were the only white people on their school bus and were beaten and bullied daily going to and from school. Racism is racism, no matter what the source. Call it what it is. Don't excuse it for one group of people while denouncing another group.
