Some misconceptions about Kelly Preston's pregnancy at 47 cleared up (Lost, children, life)

Recently someone mentioned to me how Kelly Preston got pregnant at 47 and how women can have babies right upto 50 now because of medical advances. This is simply not true. A little known fact is that the baby will not be biologically hers since she used donor eggs, which means she is just carrying someone else's child.

"They come in and say, 'Well, so-and-so got pregnant, and she's 47. My husband and I have been trying for so long. Why can't I get pregnant?' What are my chances of getting pregnant at age 47 if I use in-vitro fertilization and my own eggs?

"Success with IVF at this age with patient's own eggs is practically unheard of," said Kreiner, of East Coast Fertility.

The odds are so low that Kort highly discourages women that age from even attempting IVF with their own eggs.

"Forty-three is pretty much my cutoff for IVF with a woman's own eggs. Occasionally, I'll do it at 44," he said. "The success rate is under 5 percent. When I explain this to women, they don't even want to try."

What exactly is your point?
Couples often use egg and sperm donors.
Women often raise children that are DNA matches.
Woman can have their embryos frozen for years.

Why in the world would someone want to have a child at 47.

The point being that I've always maintained that it's riskier, not preferable and less likely for a woman to have children after 35 to which the response from many these days has been how "people" are having kids in their 40s. It's somehow not politically correct to represent the biological facts as they are. This article clears it up quite well.

Did she ever actually confirm she was having a HUMAN baby? I wouldn't be surprised if they were talking about a dog, considering they just lost both of theirs.

I'm 41, and have 4 kids-16, 6, 5, and 2. Needless to say I am exhausted. I should have had my kids when I was younger, but that's not the way it turned out.

WHY anyone would want to have a child after age 40 is beyond me. Yes, I understand people are usually more settled and financially stable by then, but really...how long will you be around to parent this child? Another 30 years, maybe 40??

By the time my youngest is my age, I'll have one foot in the grave. I'll most likely never see him reach his 50th birthday. That thought definitely bothers me. I hope I'll live to be 100, but I doubt it.

Have kids when you're young, when you have plenty of time to watch them grow up (and the ENERGY), and hopefully meet your grandkids and even great grandkids.

thanks for the info. I assumed it was IVF, but I wondered if it was her own egg. I guess not. I wonder if that does away with the higher risk of Downe's. I don't think having a baby at their ages is a good idea. I got beat up on another thread for saying that. Yes, I know, her life, not mine. Whatever. IMO, not a smart thing to do.

can someone point me to the statement that proves the Travolta's did not get pregnant by natural method?
