Melissa's father passed away at the end of January. She's just now settling his estate, and most companies she has dealt with have been accommodating and understanding.

I previously worked for Verizon Wireless. I had come across this twice before. If you get a SUPERVISOR on the phone you might be able to get it rectified. My suggestion is to get a copy of the death certificate and fax it to them, explain to them that the bills do not come to your address and they should be accomodating. They will push to have the account changed to your name to save the churn(loss of a customer) but obviously you don't have to continue it. You can always push for the next level supervisor if the person doesn't want to help. When all is said and done, have them send a final bill with a 0 balance to you but make sure it is a different address.
When my mom died, Verizon tried to stick us with the early termination fee when we canceled the contract. After talking to a supervisor, they agreed to waive it. It's not like we wanted to cancel it, but had no choice as she had no will and no money for us to pay the bills.
