With why you rooted and what ROM your using. My main reason was to get rid of the HTC/AT&T bloat and to have more control over what my apps have access to. I'm using Android Revolution HD on an HTC Inspire.
I have a Galaxy SGS2 with UnNamed ROM and Entropy's DD kernel.
Reasons? Much faster of course (deodexed, zip aligned, bloatware removed, kernel tweaks) but also battery life and the ability to add things like the percentage to the battery indicator on the task bar up top, and animations from ICS (crt animation off, the animation that they use switching screens, etc.)
Also I can enable tethering without a tethering plan (though I can get caught, by various methods), which helps at work sometimes when I need an outside connection to test something internally.
I'm curious to see some rooted feedback from the forum regulars as well. The HoFo forums can get a bit ... messy. Right now I'm running my factory Thunderbolt image, and the only reason I see to change is to protest the philosophy of bloatware.

Reasons I rooted:
I wanted to be able to take a screenshot. Why is this not baked into the OS I don't know.
Remove the VZW bloatware. I got so annoyed getting reminders for apps I do not use. Need a laugh sometime? Read the reviews for VCast Music in the Android Market.
I don't think HTC will update my phone with the newest SenseUI. Thanks to rooting, I now have Sense 3.5.

So far so good. I've tried a half dozen ROM's.

As long as you find a daily driver kernel, it's worth it for the bump in battery life and speed, at least in my experience. You just flash the zip through CWM like the ROM.
HTC Evo running running CyanogenMod7 nightlies. I rooted to play with this phone (2 years going). Now I enjoy better than stock battery life, free tethering, and root required apps.
HTC Inspire running Talon AOSP rom. I rooted within hours of purchasing my phone. The development community surrounding a phone is one of the criteria I use to pick my phones.
Anyone else tried ICS yet? It's pretty snappy even in it's beta phase on XDA.
most rooting is pretty easy now with all the "one-click" options for most android phones. besides the custom roms , etc..there's a ton of very useful apps that can only be used on a rooted phone.
I rooted my phone to get rid of the bloatware and to get a better battery life. I'm running CM7.
