MetroPCS Claims World's First Voice-over-LTE Service | PCWorld Business Center

I'm curious whether my Galaxy S3 from Sprint will be updated as Sprint adopts LTE.

Wondering if VOLTE is a hardware function, or firmware/Android function. I am assuming it is a combination of both.

From Alcatel-Lucent, whom I believe is providing LTE gear for Sprint:

Mike,

Ericsson is actually the main vendor for this rollout for MetroPCS as well as some other little guys. Lucent is a tied with some differnet carriers and regions.

This is only a minor firmware update to LTE devices which basically change the dialer to 'send' the call to a capable LTE equipped transceiver. Not too dissimilar to using VoIP with the Skype app on your phone.

This is where we are headed in the next few years as we transition out of packet data for call transmissions(epsecially with AT&T announcement of ditching 2G services.)

Thanks, S_G,
That my super-duper S3 will not be outdated, but will be updated via firmware was what I wanted to hear.

Sprint will be the first carrier releasing HD Voice over their CDMA network in 2013. Currently the EVO LTE and S3 support HD Voice over CDMA. HD Voice doubles the bandwidth of available to voice. The S3 is capable of VoLTE, but it will not come to any of the big carriers anytime soon.

I think it will be years. I'm hoping this will mark the end of CDMA versus GSM and third parties will be able to make phones independent of the carriers. But I'm not sure if that will be the case.
