Looks like voice mail is another technology starting to be replaced. Perhaps, it will still be around for awhile, some people just do not want to always be bothered, but it is becoming old-school. Is this just because the newer technology is better and more efficient...or are we really less patient? The only thing I do not like about voice mail is you have to wait awhile not knowing if you get a response. I have had this problem with government officials. It is a real pet peeve because I answer all phone calls. To not call someone back is just plain rude and inconsiderate, a complete lack of common courtesy. Anyway, before I get too off topic, I do prefer voice mail when I am away or unavailable. I can always (which I do) get back with that person later when it is convenient. I do not want to have the pressure to answer back right away on some occasions. Hence, because there are still some people like me, voice mail may never completely go away; it will just be less common, that's all.

With the rise of texting and chat apps, voice-mail use is waning.

I rarely leave or receive a voicemail. It's pretty much standard to text or email after a missed call. The recipient can respond to that text/email or call back whenever they get a moment. There is no urge to respond immediately.

When you hear that text going off, you do not have to respond right away, but it is in the back of my mind until I respond.

Note: I still use voice mail because much of my family is old-school. You can not text and/or even e-mail them!

I guess I should add that I use voicemail for business calls and work much more frequently than for personal purposes.

Yes, in business life voice mail is still very much in use. Some people is just not appropriate to text.
