There is no such thing as a "Prepaid iPhone", some folks have activated iPhones on prepaid services though. The actual phone is no different on prepaid vs. monthly (Postpaid).

It's on Apple's website. You have the option of buying a prepaid IPhone instead of committing to a two year contract

I thought there was a carrier that offered the iPhone service on a prepaid plan, including selling the phone.

Yes, you can get one on Virgin at least and maybe a couple others. I'm not sure if Cricket is prepaid exactly, but it is no contract and you buy the phone upfront and pay one price for unlimited service as I understand it.

The cost of such a phone upfront is in the vicinity of $500-600. But in most cases you can pay less over the course of a couple years if you just buy it upfront with one of these plans, at least if you are using a single phone. Once you start tacking on 2 and 3 phones to a single plan the prices start to even out a bit I think. Some people will still go with the contract plans simply to not have to pay out such a large amount upfront. But a lot of it is inertia too; they stick with the same company. Remember that when iPhones first came out there was only AT&T for the first few years, then there was just Verizon and AT&T, and so on. Now there are several different companies to choose from to get at least some models.

Get a prepaid iPhone 4 (8GB) for $349.99

You'll need to take a drive to RadioShack, but it's worth it if you want a no-contract, low-monthly-fee iPhone. The 16GB 4S model is $449.99.

Available in black or white, RadioShack has the no-contract iPhone 4S for hundreds below the regular price.
