Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

I do have a cable modem currently. ComCast said they'd just switch out the modems for me (to wireless). It's still $7 a month, which isn't ideal, but it sounds like buying a modem AND a router could set me back a bit. I have some time to decide (and save) though.

In the short term it will set you back, in the long term you'll save money. $7 a month, you can buy a modem and in 10 months it's paid for itself.

True. So, $90-100 for the modem. How much for a decent router?

As a previous person mentioned, since you already have an Apple ecosystem, it might be in your best interest to get an Apple Airport: Apple - Wi-Fi - Compare Wi-Fi base stations

This is what I'm thinking, too, NJBest. Are they difficult to set up and will I still need a modem with it? (Sorry, not the most technologically inclined person you've met.)

Picking up the iPhone tomorrow.

ETA: Basically, I want to provide my own WiFi signal in my apartment so I can use the iPhone 5 without using up my Data Plan. I'll also have my iMac connect wirelessly, too. So, what all do I need to buy to ensure a strong signal that won't cut out during browsing or watching videos?

You don't "need" a new modem. You can use the modem that you are currently renting from Comcast. The suggestion to get a new modem was to save you money in the long run (1 year+). It is not necessary.

You do need a router. The Airport is an excellent router that is extremely easy to set up, but it comes with a hefty price tag. A much cheaper router, such as the one below, will provide you with all the functionality you describe... but is not as simple as the Airport. No one other than Apple has figured out how to design a good router setup process.

The modem I have now isn't wireless, though. It still uses cables to connect to the computer. Does the Airport negate the need for a wireless modem? If it does, then it's worth paying more for because then I'm saving by not having to buy a new modem.

If I need a wireless modem first, then ComCast said they can just switch mine out. Still $7 a month but...

If your modem did wireless it would then be an all in one device, which is what no one recommends. An Airport is no different than any other wireless router, it just has Apples name on it and therefore, costs quite a bit more than your average router, it has no mystical powers that make it any better.

The only reason we recommended buying a modem was you'll save money in the long run, it was not to give you wireless (which it wouldn't anyway). Whether you continue to rent from a modem from Comcast or buy your own, you'll still have to buy a wireless router.
