What problems are modem/router combos causing versus a stand alone router? Are there specific
Makes or models that seem to be more problematic?

They may have fewer features, more importantly if the router or modem portion dies you've lost the perfectly good other half.

Each will burn out eventually, and different rates. In my experience, routers usually die before modems.

In case anyone was curious as to the outcome, I left my set-tup exactly as it was and just bought an Airport Express router. It was a few bucks more but it was quick and seamless and I figured having a computer, phone and router made by the same company could likely make it all mesh easier.

I'm not the smartest banana in the room but it was the best decision for me. Especially since I'm not a techie by any stretch of the imagination. The reason I chose Apple to begin with was that it was incredibly user friendly and I needed that.

Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions everyone! Carry on...

The better modems are only available as a separate component.
